TurretinFan: Answering Popular Roman Catholic Arguments Against Sola Scriptura (Part Three)
.MP3 Available Here
"TurretinFan" (a pseudonym used in order to separate his secular career from his apologetics ministry), a contributor to Dr. James R. White's blog on the Alpha & Omega Ministries web site (http://www.aomin.org/), will address: "PART 3: Answering Popular Roman Catholic Arguments Against Sola Scriptura".
Sola Scriptura is one of the battle cries of the 16th century Protestant Reformation that is most vociferously opposed as heretical by Roman Catholic apologists. This Latin phrase meaning "Scripture Alone", in reference to the Reformers' protest against the unbiblical and antibiblical teachings of the Roman Catholic Magisterium, declared that Scripture is the *sole* infallible, inerrant authority over the church.
Tonight our guest "TurretinFan" will respond to the most popular Roman Catholic arguments against this vital pillar of the Reformation.

John Thornbury: David Brainerd: Pioneer Missionary to the American Indians
.MP3 Available Here
John Thornbury, Baptist historian and author, will address the theme: "David Brainerd: Pioneer Missionary to the American Indians".
"David Brainerd (1718-1747), a missionary to the American Indians, has become one of the most influential missionaries of all time. His personal ministry lasted only three years, but his journal and diary, edited and published by Jonathan Edwards, have inspired countless missionaries over the years to reach thousands, or even millions, of souls across the globe. His life was not an easy one; in fact, he suffered hardships of many kinds. It was for enduring these difficulties in order to further the gospel of Christ that he has gained such respect and had such a far-reaching effect. He life is worthy of study for anyone who desires to have a impact with their life on the growth of the Kingdom of God..." -- Jeremy D. Lantz
John Thornbury's books include "God Sent Revival: The Story of Asahel Nettleton and the Second Great Awakening", "A System of Bible Doctrine", "Five Pioneer Missionaries", "David Brainerd - Pioneer Missionary to the American Indians", "The Doctrine of the Church: A Baptist View", "Help Us to Pray", and "A Pastor in New York: The Life and Times of Spencer Houghton Cone" (see this link).
For 44 years John faithfully served as pastor of the historic Winfield Baptist Church in Pennsylvania (see http://www.winfieldbaptist.com/ ), until his very recent retirement and move to Kentucky

Jon Cardwell: "Christian Behavior" in modern English, will address the theme of this work by John Bunyan
.MP3 Available Here
Jon Cardwell, Editor of John Bunyan's "Christian Behavior" in modern English, will address the theme of this work by John Bunyan.
John Bunyan was born in Elstow, England, near Bedford, on November 28, 1628. After squandering much of his life away in worldly wantonness, Bunyan was converted to the Christian faith and soon afterward, became an excellent expositor of the Holy Scriptures. During the reign of Charles II, he was imprisoned in November 1660 for the crime of preaching without a license from the state church, a violation of anit-Puritan "Clarendon Code." John Bunyan is considered one of the greatest of the Puritan writers and is most noted for his alegorical classic, THE PILGRIM'S PROGRESS.
The treatise we are addressing tonight, "Christian Behavior", was written in 1663 during John Bunyan's incarceration in the Bedford prison and it was first published as a pocket edition in 1674 after his release from prison. Noted in his own "Epistle to the Reader," Mr. Bunyan's desire for Christians to have a pocket reader of very practical Christianity is, perhaps, something quite needed for Christians today. Among his contemporaries, and even among those following him, were very devout and pious men of God, who had written "Bodies" of practical divinity or practical Christianity that were hundreds, even thousands, of pages long. This splendid work is concise, yet full of practical, Biblical wisdom. Our edition of this work, as well as the editor's advertisement, come from a three volume collection edited by George Offor, Esq., and entitled, The Whole Works of John Bunyan. George Offor's edition of Bunyan's works was published in Glasgow in 1862.
Our guest ton, Jon Cardwell, has served the Lord as a missionary to the Philippines, as a pastor in California, and as a missionary-pastor in remote "bush" Alaska, to the Aleut people of King Cove and to the Yup'ik people of Scammon Bay. He has been ministering as pastor of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Anniston, Alabama since January 2009.

David Vandrunen: Bioethics & the Christian Life: A Guide to Making Difficult Decisions
.MP3 Available Here
David Vandrunen, Robert B. Strimple associate professor of systematic theology and Christian ethics, Westminster Seminary California, Escondido, California, will address the theme of his book "Bioethics & the Christian Life: A Guide to Making Difficult Decisions".
Just about everyone will face a difficult bioethics decision at some point. In this book a theologian, ethicist, and lawyer equips Christians to make such decisions based on biblical truth, wisdom, and virtue.
Though a relatively new discipline, bioethics has generated extraordinary interest due to a number of socially pressing issues. Bioethics and the Christian Life places bioethics within the holistic context of the Christian life, both developing a general Christian approach to making bioethics decisions and addressing a number of specific, controversial areas of bioethics.
Clear, concise, and well-organized, the book is divided into three sections. The first lays the theological foundation for bioethics decision-making and discusses the importance of wisdom and virtue in working through these issues. The second section addresses beginning-of-life issues, such as abortion, stem-cell research, and infertility treatments. The third section covers end-of-life issues, such as living wills, accepting and refusing medical treatment, and treatment of patients in permanent vegetative states.

Jeffrey D. Johnson: Behind the Bible: An Introduction to Textual Criticism
.MP3 Available Here
Jeffrey D. Johnson, pastor of Grace Bible Church in Conway, Arkansas, will address the theme of his new book "Behind the Bible: An Introduction to Textual Criticism".
Many scholars who reject the inspiration, reliability and inerrancy of the Scriptures, like Bart Ehrman, believe that if God had put forth the effort to inspire the words of the Bible, then he would have surely preserved those words. According to Ehrman, God simply would not have allowed any textual variation to exist in the transmission of the New Testament if He had inspired it in the first place. Tonight our guest, Jeffrey D. Johnson, will demonstrate that one who holds to the highest view of Scripture and its inspiration can look at the very same data and still present a strong, compelling case for the preservation of the text of Scripture over time.
Specifically, Jeffrey will discuss the different reasons for textual variations in the New Testament, including variations brought by time and variations brought by translation. He will also address the objective criteria and subjectivity used in dating ancient manuscripts and the methods of textual criticism, and will provide an overview of the history of the Greek text.
"Jeffrey D. Johnson has provided a helpful and clear discussion of the key issues behind the "whys" and "wherefores" of how we got our New Testament text. In light of the frontal assaults upon the integrity of the text of the New Testament pervasive in our day, it is important for believers to have a knowledge of these matters, and Johnson's work is a useful addition to the introductions available on the subject."

Jeffrey D. Johnson: The Nature, Purpose, Functions, Worship, Membership, Discipline &; Authority of the Local Church
.MP3 Available Here
Jeffrey D. Johnson, pastor of Grace Bible Church in Conway, Arkansas, will address the theme of his new book "The Church: Why Bother?: The Nature, Purpose, Functions, Worship, Membership, Discipline &; Authority of the Local Church".
Here is what some prominent Christian thinkers are saying about "The Church: Why Bother?":
"This little book of Jeffrey D. Johnson has a loving and exalted view of the church of Jesus Christ, but it is also aware of its tensions and imperfections as congregations having to live in a fallen world under the holy requirements of the Head of the Church. This book will help you to understand the life of the church, its duties and blessings and it will encourage you to give your years to serving and strengthening the people of God."—GEOFF THOMAS
Pastor of Alfred Place Baptist Church in Aberystwyth, Wales
"The idea of church membership today is either an assumption that has never been challenged or considered biblically, or else abandoned by new church starts as a useless relic of the past that is irrelevant for churches and Christians now. We can be thankful that there are pastors such as Jeffrey D. Johnson who address this issue from a biblical perspective and demonstrate the importance of meaningful membership in a local church by Christians today."—DON WHITNEY Southern Baptist Seminary
"I am glad to recommend this new book by Jeffry D. Johnson, which confronts such ignorance in a very clear and Biblical manner. The book is titled THE CHURCH, WHY BOTHER— The Nature, Purpose, Functions, Member-ship, Discipline and Authority of the Local Church. Here is a book which every member of every Baptist church (and even some other denominations) need to read and apply to their churches and their lives. The book is very brief and direct and even applicable and necessary, especially for our day. As the title tells us, the book covers almost every aspect of what a church is and what it should and should not be doing, according to the Scriptures. It can be used by the individual pastor or Christian to learn his duty to his church, or it can be the foundation of a series of sermons to enlighten a church in these areas, or it can be used as Sunday School material or in individual classes or Bible studies.
"If readers say they already have such books, I would tell you I do too. But every age is different, as it seems our churches slip further and further away from Biblical truth, in the passing of time, and they lean more and more towards the use of the latest unbiblical methods and thoughts of church ministry and church life. Here is a book which deals even with the modern age in which we live, and the weakness of the church and churches of our day, and without fear the author sets forth Biblical truth as to what the church of our Lord Jesus Christ needs to be today according to Scripture!"—Dr. Richard P. Belcher
Jeffrey D. Johnson graduated from Central Baptist College with a B.S. in Bible and earned his M. Rel. in Biblical Studies and a Th. D. in Systematics from Veritas Theological Seminary. He resides in Conway, Arkansas, with this wife, Letha, and their son, Martyn.
Jeffrey is also the author of "The Fatal Flaw of the Theology Behind Infant Baptism".

TurretinFan: The Roman Catholic Dogma of Purgatory and 1 Corinthians 3
.MP3 Available Here
"TurretinFan" (a pseudonym used in order to separate his secular career from his apologetics ministry), a contributor to Dr. James R. White's blog on the Alpha & Omega Ministries web site (http://www.aomin.org/), will address: "The Roman Catholic dogma of Purgatory and 1 Corinthians 3".
In 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 we read:
"According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work. If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire."
Roman Catholic apologists will point to this portion of Scripture as a proof for the existence of Purgatory, which, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, is:
"...a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions..."
Tonight our guest TurretinFan will provide an Evangelical Christian response to the Roman Catholic interpretation of this passage by addressing:
1) The Timing of the Passage (What day is being discussed?)
2) The Subject of the Passage (What people are being discussed?)
3) The Object of the Fire in the Passage (What is the fire testing?)
4) The Meaning of "Saved as through Fire" in the Passage
4) The Meaning of "Suffer Loss" in the Passage
5) The Influence of the Latin Vulgate on the Roman Catholic Argument (with respect to "suffer loss" and "saved as through fire")

Jim Elliff: Book Tribalism: A Call to Emphasize Serious Bible Reading
.MP3 Available Here
Jim Elliff, founder and president of Christian Communicators Worldwide, will address the theme: "Book Tribalism: A Call to Emphasize Serious Bible Reading."
According to our guest, "We read too many books and don't read the Bible." Jim is very concerned that too many schools and Christian leaders that proport to teach the Bible are not living up to their claim, teaching more of the extra-biblical thoughts of popular authors than of the Scriptures themselves. You can read more about Jim's thoughts on this in an article on the same theme here: www.CCWtoday.org. For further impact, see this video.
Since The beginning of CCW in 1985, Jim Elliff has addressed organizations, groups in educational settings, churches, and pastor's fraternals of various denominations in almost every state of the United States and in numerous foreign countries. Jim has been privileged to address groups in all kinds of settings—everything from a witch doctor's hut to a Communist meeting hall!
CCW has also begun a study center, The Muller Center for Biblical Studies, through which they do serious Bible reading. For instance, their first group of students last year read 132 chapters each week......They ended their year with a trip to Israel to see places they had read about.
Jim has a passion to communicate. He is the author of four books that have been published in the US and overseas, Led by the Spirit, Pursuing God—A Seeker's Guide, Going Under: Discussions on Baptism and Wasted Faith. He has written or edited many booklets which have been published by CCW. Jim’s articles also appear in a variety of periodicals and his messages are frequently heard on radio. He was featured in a seven-part interview called How Children Come to Faith in Christ with FamilyLife Today hosted by Dennis Rainey, and in a five-part series on Revive Our Hearts with Nancy DeMoss. Jim has contributed chapters in several other books, as well as writing extensively for the web. Many of his articles may be found at http://www.ccwtoday.org/.
In addition to his writing and travel, Jim began Christ Fellowship of Kansas City in 2003. This unique church is made up of home congregations in the Kansas City metro area.

Dr. Steven J. Lawson: Pillars of Grace
.MP3 Available Here
Dr. Steven J. Lawson, the senior pastor of Christ Fellowship Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama, will address the theme of his latest book: "Pillars of Grace: A Long Line of Godly Men" (see http://www.ligonier.org/store/pillars-of-grace-hardcover/).
This is second volume of Dr. Steven J. Lawson's projected five-volume series that traces the unbroken line of men who have taught the truths of God's sovereign grace throughout history.
Volume one, "Foundations of Grace", was devoted to the biblical writers as well as to the Lord Jesus Christ. Volume two, "Pillars of Grace", is devoted to the early apologists, church fathers, medieval theologians, and the Protestant Reformers.
The doctrines of grace are often known as the five points of Calvinism, but they were not the invention of John Calvin or his reforming cohorts of the sixteenth century. Rather, they are biblical doctrines, as Dr. Steven J. Lawson demonstrated in his book Foundations of Grace (2006). Now, in Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson shows that the doctrines of grace have been understood and taught—sometimes in embryonic form, sometimes with great clarity—throughout church history. From the time of the early church fathers to the years of the Reformers, there have been key men in the church, pillars as it were, who stood on the foundation of Scripture and upheld the truth of God’s sovereign role in salvation.
In Pillars of Grace, Dr. Lawson walks readers through the ups and downs of church history, profiling these voices for the truth. The inescapable conclusion is that the doctrines of grace are no innovation, but the consistent witness of some of the greatest men of the church.
