TOM ASCOL, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, Florida, the Executive Director of Founders Ministries and Editor of the Founders Journal , will address the theme: "THE SUFFICIENCY OF SCRIPTURE".

In regard to the Reformation Principle of "Sola Scriptura" (that the Scriptures alone are the church of Jesus Christ's inerrant, infallible, and sufficient authority in matters of faith and practice), Rome did and does *not* reject the inerrancy of Scripture. In fact, it upholds in its official dogma that a belief in the inerrancy of Scripture is essential. However, Rome did and *does* reject the formal sufficiency of Scripture. Rome, in their denial of the Bible's perspicuity or sufficient clarity, believes that the church needs an infallible authority outside of the Canon to declare what the Scriptures truly teach, and a sacred tradition to provide further guidance in matters of faith and practice. Today, Dr. Tom Ascol will explain why he believes it is not enough to believe in the inerrancy of the Scriptures, but their sufficiency also must be believed. Dr. Ascol will also explain why he believes many Protestants (modern Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Charismatics and Fundamentalists), have, in practice, also violated the the sufficiency of Scripture.

According to the Internet Public Library (IPL), "No one really knows how many copies of the Bible have been printed, sold, or distributed. The Bible Society's attempt to calculate the number printed between 1816 and 1975 produced the figure of 2,458,000,000. A more recent survey, for the years up to 1992, put it closer to 6,000,000,000 in more than 2,000 languages and dialects. Whatever the precise figure, the Bible is by far the bestselling book of all time."

As the British TIMES newspaper put it in 1996: "Forget modern British novelists and TV tie-ins, the Bible is the best-selling book every year. If sales of the Bible were included in best-seller lists, it would be a rare week when anything else would achieve a look in. It is wonderful, weird ... that in this godless age... this one book should go on selling, every month."


While these statistics are indeed impressive, the sad reality is that many of these Bibles are left unread, crammed into cluttered bookshelves or gathering dust on end tables. Many if not most of us in the English speaking world take for granted that we have the Word of God in our own language, oblivious or unmoved by the fact that many heroic Christians in centuries past endured imprisonment, torture and death so that all might have the precious Scriptures in their own native tongue.
