Warren Cole Smith: A Lover's Quarrel with the Evangelical Church

.
MP3 Available Here

Warren Cole Smith, publisher and editor of the Evangelical Press News Service , will address the theme of his controversial new book: "A Lover's Quarrel with the Evangelical Church".

From the Introduction:

"My Name Is Warren, and I’m a Recovering Evangelical... For most of my Christian life, I have considered myself an evangelical. From the time I made a public profession of faith in Christ at age fourteen and for most of my adult life until now, “evangelical” was a label I gladly wore. The word evangelical was one I liked because it seemed to transcend secular politics and religious denominations. I could claim kin with other evangelicals in denominations different from my own. I could disagree with someone about welfare reform or tax laws, but we could agree on the power of “Christ and him crucified” to save a lost and dying world, a world that includes you and me...

"...What is it about evangelical theology or evangelical practice that is both so appealing and so troubling? I could not deny that I had seen much good come out of parachurch ministries and evangelical churches, so I was not willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater. But it was clear that I was less and less comfortable calling myself an evangelical if what I was seeing was what that word meant. I began, you might say, to develop a lover’s quarrel with the evangelical church and evangelical theology and practice..." (
Read the full Introduction here).

"Words exchanged in lover’s quarrels are best quickly forgotten, but the terms Warren Cole Smith uses to critique current evangelical excesses – “the Christian Industrial Complex,” “Body-Count Evangelism” – should long be remembered. Smith points out that megachurches sometimes inflate their numbers, but even an accurate count may register only superficiality. Smith’s call for churches to emphasize spiritual depth is worth hearing." -- Dr. Marvin Olasky, editor-in-chief, WORLD Magazine, and provost, The King’s College

"This is an important book for a crucial moment in our history as Christians in the United States. Besides being richly biblical in its analysis of contemporary evangelicalism, this book is written by a veteran journalist with hard-hitting and inescapable data to support his conclusions. I highly recommend this book." -- Dr. Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California

James Swan: Did Martin Luther Believe in the Reformed Tulip? (Encore Presentation)

.
MP3 Available Here

James Swan, who is involved in teaching ministry at the Pompton Plains Reformed Bible Church in New Jersey, will address "Did Martin Luther Believe in the Reformed Tulip?"

James has a hobby of tracking down obscure Luther facts. Today we'll examine some of the recent claims about Martin Luther, as well as address the similarities between Calvinism and Luther's theology.

Because of the emphasis James places on the Reformation, his writing tends to attract defenders of the Roman Catholic Church. He spends considerable time interacting with the arguments and materials they produce, calling them to embrace the sole authority of the Scriptures, and salvation by faith alone through grace alone, because of Christ alone.

James is also a member of "Team Apologian", contributing articles to the blog on the web site of renowned Bible scholar Dr. James R. White's
Alpha and Omega Ministries , contributes Reformation articles for Christian apologist Dr. Eric Svendsen's New Testament Research Ministries' website, and has had articles published in the Reformed periodical, The Outlook . He also runs his own daily blog, Beggars All: Reformation and Apologetics , dedicated to historical and Biblical research on the Protestant Reformation.

Brad K. Gsell: The Legacy of Billy Graham: The Accommodation of Truth to Error in the Evangelical Church

x

Brad K. Gsell, an elder and minister of music of the Bible Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, NC, will address the theme of his very controversial book: "The Legacy of Billy Graham: The Accommodation of Truth to Error in the Evangelical Church".

According to a post by Michael Wagner on "The Chalcedon Foundation" website:

"For a few decades the most prominent leader within the religious movement known as “evangelicalism” has been evangelist Billy Graham. He is well known for his large evangelistic crusades that draw thousands of people. Billy Graham is a religious celebrity, and he is revered by millions of evangelical Christians around the world. Indeed, some evangelicals attribute their conversion to Christianity to the ministry of Rev. Graham... Billy Graham is a very successful and popular Christian leader. But success and popularity are not to be the standard for Christians. God’s Word, the Bible, is the standard, and by this standard Graham falls far short. It’s great that some people have turned to Christ through his ministry, but his Arminianism and other errors mark him as one who cannot receive support from Reformed Christians."

This discussion is important today because as we approach the day when Mr. Graham, now 91, can no longer participate in public Evangelism due to health reasons, or departs from this earth, those in power in the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association are faced with the question of who will carry the torch for this organization further into the third millennium, and whether or not Mr. Graham's flawed approach to evangelism will be championed or abandoned.

Today our guest Brad K. Gsell will document that this beloved hero of modern evangelicalism (and of Americans in general spanning religious affiliation):

  • Insists that Modernists be included on Crusade Committees
  • Includes Catholics and Non-Believing Jews on his Crusade Committees
  • Sends converts back to Liberal Protestant & Roman Catholic Churches as well as the Synagogue
  • Praised the USSR regarding its alleged support of authentically Christian Churches
  • Substitutes man-made methods for God's methods
Brad also serves as the Vice President of The Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions; Stated Clerk of Faith Presbytery, Bible Presbyterian Church; and is on the executive committee of the American Council of Christian Churches. In addition, Mr. Gsell serves as editor of Redeeming the Time, a conservative quarterly publication with the purpose of encouraging God's people and applying God's Word to the issues of our day (see http://www.rttpublications.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Redeeming-Vol-1-No-2.pdf).

Mike Horton: The Gospel-Driven Life: Being Good News People in a Bad News World"

x
MP3 Available here This mp3 is a back up copy of the show before Internet recording became availabe. Our apologies for the sound quality

Mike Horton, author and co-host of "THE WHITE HORSE INN", will address the theme of his provocative, controversial new book: "The Gospel-Driven Life: Being Good News People in a Bad News World"

This new work of Dr. Horton's is his sequel to "CHRISTLESS CHRISTIANITY: The Alternative Gospel of the American Church". His latest message is this, “the only thing that the church can provide that is truly unique is the gospel.”

This book serves as a reminder that the gospel is for both Christians and non-Christians. Religious programs can create unique cultural centers, but the gospel is what creates a truly ‘cross-cultural’ community with a focus on Christ as both the host and the meal that delivers transformation in a world wasting away.

The Rev. Dr. Michael S. Horton is the J. Gresham Machen professor of systematic theology at Westminster Seminary California . He is the main host of " The White Horse Inn" radio broadcast and editor-in-chief of Modern Reformation magazine . He received his M.A. from Westminster Seminary California, his Ph.D. from Wycliffe Hall, Oxford and the University of Coventry , and also completed a research fellowship at Yale University Divinity School .

Dr. Horton is author of more than 20 books, including Putting Amazing Back Into Grace, A Better Way: Rediscovering the Drama of God-Centered Worship, The Law of Perfect Freedom, Made in America, Where in the World is the Church, We Believe: Recovering the Essentials of the Apostle's Creed, Covenant and Eschatology, Lord and Servant, Covenant and Salvation, People and Place (forthcoming September 2008), God of Promise: Introducing Covenant Theology, Too Good to be True: Finding Hope in a World of Hype and many others (
see a list of Dr. Horton's books here
).

Dr. Horton is a minister in the
United Reformed Churches of North America
. He has served two churches in southern California and currently resides with his wife, Lisa and four children in Escondido, California.

Co-hosting the program will be Rev. Jacob Smith who is on the ministry staff of the historic Saint George's Episcopal Church in New York City and Rev. David Corson, Esq., Adult Sunday School Teacher at Hope Reformed Baptist Church of Medford,
Long Island.

Latayne C. Scott: The Marks of a Cult: Lessons to Remember on the Anniversary of the Jonestown Suicide-Massacre

Latayne C. Scott, a Mormon convert to Evangelical Christianity, author of 13 published books, Chair of the Department of Biblical Representational Research and Author in Residence at Trinity Southwest University in Albuquerque, NM and the recipient of the Distinguished Christian Service Award by Pepperdine University for "Creative Christian Writing", will address the theme: "The Marks of a Cult: Lessons to Remember on the Anniversary of the Jonestown Suicide-Massacre".

Today, Wednesday, November 18, 2009, marks the 31st anniversary of the "Jonestown Suicide-Massacre" in a remote jungle settlement in Guyana, South America. 918 United States citizens died that day. It was the largest number of American civilian lives lost in a single event before September 11, 2001. It is very fitting that we address the marks of a cult on this infamous date, in hopes that those listening will be prevented from joining a cult, and that those who are already in a cult may recognize it, and flee from it, after hearing this broadcast. Latayne will also distinguish between those groups which are cults by virtue of their heretical teaching and practice, and those which are "cultic" or "cult-like" by virtue of their oppressive, dictatorial leadership (in spite of the fact they may be doctrinally orthodox).

Latayne is most well known for her classic work THE MORMON MIRAGE: A Former Member Looks at the Church Today now in its Third Edition. In the first edition of The Mormon Mirage, Latayne C. Scott shared her remarkable journey out of Mormonism as she uncovered shocking inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and contradictions in the faith she had loved and lived. Thirty years later, Mormonism and Mormon scholarship have evolved with the times. In her third, revised and updated edition of her well-known book, Scott keeps pace with changes and advances in Mormonism, and reveals formidable new challenges to its claims and teachings. The Mormon Mirage provides fascinating, carefully documented insights into • DNA research’s withering implications for the Book of Mormon • the impact of new “revelations” on Latter-day Saint (LDS) race relations • new findings about Mormon history • increasing publicity about LDS splinter groups, particularly polygamous ones • recent disavowals of long-held doctrines by church leadership • the rise of Mormon apologetics on the Internet.

Leslie Wagner-Wilson: The Jonestown Suicide-Massacre: A Survivor's Testimony

MP3 Available here This mp3 is a back up copy of the show before Internet recording became availabe. Our apologies for the sound quality

Leslie Wagner-Wilson, author of "Slavery of Faith", will address the theme: "The Jonestown Suicide-Massacre: A Survivor's Testimony".

Tomorrow (Wednesday, November 18) marks the 31st anniversary of the "Jonestown Suicide-Massacre" in a remote jungle settlement in Guyana, South America. 918 United States citizens died that day. An estimated 93% of those who died were African American. It was the largest number of American civilian lives lost in a single event "(before September 11, 2001, during which there were 2,974 fatalities on American soil, out of which there were 2,669 American lives lost: 2,266 civilians and 403 among the FDNY, NYPD and Port Authority Police Dept.)". This included United States Congressman Leo Ryan and his entourage. His assassination marked the first and only murder of a U.S. Congressman in the history of the United States.

After surviving sixteen months in the armed jungle compound and through daily prayer amongst a world of madness, our guest Leslie Wagner-Wilson, then twenty one years old, escaped Jonestown walking thirty odd miles through the jungle along with nine other members of the cult on the morning of November 18, 1978. Strapped to her back was a 40-pound care package - her son, later to be known as the youngest survivor of Jonestown. After reaching a small outpost that night, she would be told that Congressman Leo Ryan and four of his entourage had been assassinated along with a Temple defector. Within the next two days she would be told that all of the residents of Jonestown had died, including her husband, mother, brother, sister, niece, nephew, sister in law, brother in law and friends she had grown up and loved since 13.

Since Jonestown, Slavery of Faith also chronicles Leslie's return to the U.S. under a veil of secrecy in fear of the “death squads”, her fight to maintain faith in her darkest hours; suffering Post Traumatic Stress, survivors’ guilt, drug addiction, a family suicide, redemption and finally forgiveness. All the while holding on to the only thing she knew was true-God. It shares her journey through psychological and spiritual jungles to reach a place of remembrance—- to “live their love and not their deaths.”
