Phil Johnson, Executive Director of "Grace To You," the radio, television & tape ministry of world-renowned Bible teacher, author & pastor, Dr. John MacArthur, will address the theme: "Legalism & Worldliness".
Co-hosting tonight's program is Pastor Jack Thomas of Massapequa Bible Ministries, Massapequa, Long Island, NY, a faithful cosponsor of the "Iron Sharpens Iron" program.
The terms "Legalism" and "Worldliness" are a part of common speech within Christendom, frequently uttered by individuals spanning the theological spectrum, from right to left. Since what one man views as his liberty another man views as licentiousness, obviously many of us are wrongly understanding and applying these terms. Perhaps all of us are guilty of this misapplication, at least occasionally. Of course, all of us certainly are at times guilty, in some way, of both legalism and worldliness in practice. Tonight Phil Johnson will attempt to bring some clarity to this matter in the light of Holy Scripture.

Phil Johnson, Executive Director of "Grace To You," the radio, television & tape ministry of world-renowned radio & television Bible teacher, author & pastor, Dr. John MacArthur, will address the theme: "The John Piper-Rick Warren Controversy Revisited".
As many of you have heard, John Piper, highly sought after conference speaker, popular Reformed author, founder of the ministry Desiring God (see http://www.desiringgod.org/), and pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN (see http://www.hopeingod.org/), invited controversial Southern Baptist pastor and best-selling author Rick Warren to speak on the theme "The Battle for Your Mind", at the 2010 Desiring God National Conference , which was held October 1-3. Warren was on a speaking roster that included such powerful defenders of the Reformation as Al Mohler, R.C. Sproul, Thabiti Anyabwile and John Piper himself. Although Pastor Warren could not deliver his message in person at the conference due to a number of family emergencies, he spoke to the conference audience via a video message he submitted. This invitation to Rick Warren by John Piper came as a shock to many who greatly value Piper and his ministry, due to the fact that Warren has publicly taken positions on various important issues and has spearheaded activities that most folk in the Reformed/Sovereign Grace community consider to be antithetical to Reformational thinking. In addition to Warren's invitation to Barack Obama (then Senator), a militant pro-abortionist and pro-homosexual rights advocate, to speak at his church in December, 2006, for his Global Summit on AIDS, some of Warren's theological positions are disturbing to many who love and admire Piper.
As Michael Horton, cohost of " The White Horse Inn" radio broadcast and editor-in-chief of Modern Reformation magazine , so aptly put it:"I admire Rick Warren’s zeal for reaching non-Christians and concern for global challenges. I respect him for giving away much of his income for charitable purposes."
At the same time, I believe that his message distorts the gospel and that he is contributing to the human-centered pragmatism that is eroding the proper ministry and mission of the church... While I applaud his concern for social justice, I am concerned that he confuses the law with the gospel and the work of Christians in their vocations (obeying the Great Commandment) with the work of Christ through his church in its ministry of Word and sacrament (the Great Commission)..."
...When USA Today asked him why Mormon and Jewish leaders are involved in his pastoral training programs, Rick Warren reportedly said, 'I’m not going to get into a debate over the non-essentials. I won’t try to change other denominations. Why be divisive?' (USA Today, July 21, 2003). Rick Warren endorses a host of books, from New Age authors to Emergent writers to conservative evangelicals. So why not include Calvinists?..."
...We can be so proud of getting the gospel right while we don’t bother to get the gospel out to those who need it. Furthermore, we can be self-confident in our theological integrity while ignoring the Word of God when it impinges on questions of social concern.Yet the answer is not 'deeds over creeds,' but to be re-introduced to the creeds that generate the deeds that are the fruit of genuine faith. Tonight our guest Phil Johnson will focus his attention especially on the profound statement within that hymn, "God and sinners reconciled". Chuck Colson (Founder, the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, Lansdowne, VA), Robert George (McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University) and Timothy George (Dean and Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, Birmingham, AL) recently agreed to draft a document in Manhattan, NY, calling on Christians to take a stand and decline to comply with any policies that would violate their sincerely-held religious beliefs with regard to the sanctity of life, marriage, and the family. This document has become known as "The Manhattan Declaration".
In late September, 2009, various Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican and Evangelical leaders who were specially admired by the organizers of the New York meeting for their public witness on behalf of justice, human rights, and the common good were invited to join in shaping the Manhattan Declaration. Additional religious leaders who share their deep commitments have been and are being invited to join them as signatories.
Although many prominent, Biblically sound, highly respected Christian leaders including J. Ligon Duncan III (President, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals ), Wayne Grudem (Research Professor of Theological and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary), R. Albert Mohler, Jr. (President, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) and renowned scholar Ravi Zacharias, supported and signed this document, others equally known for their firm adherence to and defense of historic, Biblical, Reformational theolgy, such as Alistair Begg, John MacArthur of "Grace To You" and James R. White of Alpha & Omega Ministries, could *not* in good conscience join these honorable men in support of this cooperative effort with Catholics and Eastern Orthodox clergy. But let's be clear, here: The church as a body has no calling to organize and protest in the political realm. Moreover, government service and political campaigning are different vocations from the calling of a pastor. It's well-nigh impossible to be a good pastor full time if you also fancy yourself a political lobbyist..."

The story of the Apostle Paul’s sermon on Mars Hill is one of the classic examples Paul’s evangelistic strategy, and it’s a model of how to confront false religion and philosophical skepticism. It's also one of the most-abused sections in all of Scripture.Today all the stress in evangelism is on style and methodology rather than truth and clarity. The conventional wisdom of this generation says we need to “contextualize” the gospel by finding common ground with our culture. We’re told we need to adapt our message as much as possible to the beliefs and preferences of our culture’s dominant philosophies, and win people chiefly by appealing to whatever they already believe and whatever already captures their interest.
In reality (and in contrast), the Apostle Paul was bold and plain-spoken. He was counter-cultural, confrontive, confident, and (by Athenian standards, much less today's standards) closed-minded. He offended a significant number of Athens's intellectual elite, and he walked away from that encounter without winning the admiration of society at large, but with just a small group of converts who followed him.
